CODE OF CONDUCT POLICY

1. Purpose

Brighton Ballet School is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment in which all students can enjoy dance, develop confidence and achieve their potential.

This Code of Conduct sets out the standards of behaviour expected from all students, parents, guardians, visitors, teachers, assistants and representatives of Brighton Ballet School.

By attending classes, workshops, rehearsals, performances or events organised by Brighton Ballet School, you agree to comply with this Code of Conduct.

Every member of our school community is expected to contribute to a positive and supportive environment.

3. Behaviour Expectations for Students

All students are expected to:

  • Treat teachers, staff, volunteers and fellow students with courtesy and respect.
  • Follow instructions given by teachers and staff.
  • Arrive punctually and prepared for class.
  • Wear the required uniform and appropriate footwear.
  • Maintain good personal hygiene.
  • Behave safely at all times.
  • Respect studio equipment and facilities.
  • Refrain from disruptive behaviour.
  • Respect personal boundaries and the wellbeing of others.
  • Support fellow students in a positive and encouraging manner.

Students must not:

  • Bully, intimidate or harass others.
  • Use offensive, abusive, discriminatory or inappropriate language.
  • Engage in physical aggression or threatening behaviour.
  • Damage property belonging to the school, venue or other students.
  • Bring alcohol, illegal substances or weapons onto any premises used by Brighton Ballet School.
  • Attend classes under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Film, photograph or record classes without prior permission.

4. Behaviour Expectations for Parents and Guardians

Parents and guardians play an important role in supporting the positive culture of Brighton Ballet School.

Parents and guardians are expected to:

  • Treat staff, teachers, volunteers and other families respectfully.
  • Follow school procedures and policies.
  • Ensure children arrive on time and are collected promptly.
  • Inform the school of any relevant medical, safeguarding or welfare concerns.
  • Maintain accurate emergency contact information.
  • Support the school’s safeguarding and behavioural expectations.

Parents and guardians must not:

  • Behave aggressively, abusively or disrespectfully towards staff, volunteers or other families.
  • Use threatening language or behaviour.
  • Interfere with the teaching of classes.
  • Enter teaching areas without permission.
  • Discuss concerns with other parents in a manner likely to cause conflict or reputational damage.

Concerns should be raised directly with the Principal in a respectful and constructive manner.

5. Behaviour Expectations for Adult Students

Adult students are expected to:

  • Respect teachers and fellow students.
  • Participate safely and responsibly.
  • Follow health and safety guidance.
  • Behave professionally and courteously.
  • Respect personal boundaries.
  • Accept corrections and instruction in a constructive manner.

Any behaviour which creates an intimidating, hostile or uncomfortable environment may result in removal from classes.

6. Safeguarding

Brighton Ballet School has a zero-tolerance approach to:

  • Child abuse.
  • Neglect
  • Bullying.
  • Harrassment.
  • Discrimination.
  • Grooming behaviour.
  • Inappropriate relationships between adults and children.

All safeguarding concerns will be taken seriously and may be referred to appropriate safeguarding agencies, local authorities or the police where necessary.

All students, parents and staff are expected to comply with the Brighton Ballet School Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy.

7. Anti-Bullying Statement

Bullying of any form will not be tolerated.

This includes:

  • Physical bullying.
  • Verbal bullying.
  • Social exclusion.
  • Cyberbulling.
  • Online harassment.
  • Discrimination based on age, disability, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or any protected characteristic.

Reports of bullying will be investigated promptly and appropriate action will be taken.

8. Social Media and Online Conduct

Students, parents and staff are expected to behave respectfully online.

The following are unacceptable:

  • Posting abusive or defamatory comments about Brighton Ballet School.
  • Sharing confidential information.
  • Publishing images of children without appropriate consent.
  • Online harassment of students, parents, staff or volunteers.
  • Misrepresenting Brighton Ballet School online.

The school reserves the right to take appropriate action where online behaviour negatively affects the welfare, safety or reputation of the school community.

9. Photography and Recording

Photography and filming may only take place in accordance with the school’s Photography and Media Consent Policy.

Students, parents and visitors must not:

  • Film classes without permission.
  • Photograph children who are not their own.
  • Share images of other students online without consent.

10. Health and Safety

All students and visitors must:

  • Follow health and safety instructions.
  • Wear suitable clothing and footwear.
  • Report hazards immediately.
  • Follow emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Inform staff of injuries or accidents.

Students must not participate if they are medically unfit to do so.

11. Respect for Facilities

All members of the school community are expected to:

  • Treat studio facilities with care.
  • Respect venue rules.
  • Dispose of rubbish responsibly.
  • Leave changing and waiting areas tidy.

Any deliberate damage may result in charges being made to cover repair or replacement costs.

12. Complaints and Concerns

Brighton Ballet School welcomes constructive feedback.

We ask that concerns are raised respectfully and allow a reasonable opportunity for investigation and response.

13. Breaches of this Code

Where this Code of Conduct is breached, Brighton Ballet School may take action including:

  • Verbal warning.
  • Written warning.
  • Temporary suspension from classes.
  • Removal from performances or events.
  • Immediate removal from premises.
  • Termination of membership or enrolment.

Where enrolment is terminated due to a serious breach of this Code, no refund will normally be payable.

14. Serious Misconduct

The following may result in immediate suspension or termination:

  • Violence or threats of violence.
  • Harassment or discrimination.
  • Safeguarding concerns.
  • Criminal behaviour.
  • Possession of illegal substances.
  • Serious disruption of classes.
  • Repeated breaches of school policies.
  • Defamatory or malicious conduct directed at the school, its staff, students or families.

15. Acceptance

By attending classes, courses, workshops, rehearsals, performances or events organised by Brighton Ballet School, students, parents, guardians and visitors acknowledge that they have read, understood and agree to comply with this Code of Conduct.
