Auditioning for Vocational Dance Schools

If you are considering any form of dance or theatre as a career you will need a solid foundation of ballet.  Preparing to audition for a full-time vocational courses or full-time ballet school can be a daunting prospect.  We have prepared several students to successfully audition for vocational dance schools, a few are currently studying on full-time vocational courses at present, such as Rambert, Laban and London Studio Centre.  We also have students that are Royal Ballet Lower and Upper School Associates.

Places at Classical Ballet Schools are notoriously hard to gain, and both parents and students have to realise the commitment needed in terms of finance, time and and hard work to prepare for auditions.  Entry to these schools is usually between around 11 and 14 years old, and then 16 to 18 years old.

Vocational Dance Schools and University Dance Courses are primarily for post A-level students who are interested in a non-classical route into a more contemporary dance world.

What to do next - Assessment

Vocational students should contact the school to arrange a private assessment class. During this class we will look at your technique and general placement and then recommend the most appropriate class for your ability.   Book a private class here. (You will need to create an account on the self-service booking system)

Exams and Qualifications

We have found in our experience that it is extremely beneficial for students to have passed Ballet exams at  any level especially Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate level classical ballet .

Pointe Work Assessments & Courses

Starting pointe work is a big decision, one that is taken after lengthy discussions with the teacher, parents and student.  Certain criteria has to be met before any student can begin pointe work.  A minimum of two classes a week must be attended and the student will have been working in demi-pointe shoes for some time before the student can continue on to do pointe work, therefore Students in Grade 4 and above are encouraged to wear demi-pointe shoes, to help strengthen their feet in preparation for pointe work.  Please note, all students must undergo a full assessment before starting pointe work or taking a pointe work class.
